UGC’S FLEXIBLE DEGREE COMPLETION PLAN EXPLAINED

UGC’S FLEXIBLE DEGREE COMPLETION PLAN EXPLAINED

1. WHAT ARE ACCELERATED DEGREE PROGRAMMES (ADPs) AND EXTENDED DEGREE PROGRAMMES (EDPs)?
• ADPs: Enable students to finish their undergraduate degree in less than three or four years by earning extra credits per semester.

Example: A highly motivated student pursuing a Bachelor’s in Science completes additional coursework during each semester and graduates in 2.5 years instead of 3 years.

• EDPs: Allow students to extend their study duration if they face challenges such as health issues or personal constraints.

Example: A student struggling to balance a job and studies opts for an additional semester, completing a three-year Bachelor’s degree in 4 years.

2. WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE OF THESE PROGRAMMES?
The initiative aims to address diverse academic needs:

• ADPs: Help high-performing students graduate early and transition quickly to higher studies or employment.

Example: A student who excels in an engineering programme uses ADP to complete their degree early and join a Master’s programme without a gap.

• EDPs: Assist students needing extra time to meet academic requirements or manage other responsibilities.

Example: A working student in a Commerce degree programme chooses EDP to spread their coursework across five years instead of four.

3. HOW WILL THESE PROGRAMMES BE IMPLEMENTED?
• Application Process: Institutions will evaluate applications for ADPs and EDPs based on academic performance and credit requirements.

• Modes of Study: Students can complete courses through traditional, online, or hybrid methods.
Example: A student opts for online courses to earn 40% of credits for their degree.

• Flexibility in Degree Duration: Degrees will specify if the programme was completed in an accelerated or extended timeframe.

4. WHEN WILL THESE OPTIONS BE AVAILABLE?
• The programmes will be introduced in the 2025–26 academic year, after the July–August session.
Example: A student beginning their degree in July 2025 can opt for ADP or EDP by the end of their first or second semester.

5. WILL THERE BE LIMITATIONS ON STUDENTS OPTING FOR THESE PROGRAMMES?
• EDP Enrolments: No restrictions on the number of students opting for extended programmes.

• ADP Enrolments: Conditional upon credit completion and performance.

Example: An ADP student may attend evening classes or additional online lectures on weekends to meet the credit requirements for early graduation.
