NATIONAL MISSION ON NATURAL FARMING (NMNF): A NEW INITIATIVE

1. What is the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF)?
The NMNF is a centrally sponsored scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. It promotes “chemical-free” farming using livestock-based inputs and natural resources. The initiative will target districts with high fertilizer consumption to encourage sustainable practices.

2. What is the Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati (BPKP)?
BPKP is a sub-scheme launched under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) during 2019-24. It was designed to promote natural farming by focusing on local resources, including livestock-based inputs like Jeevamrit and Beejamrit, for soil enrichment and crop growth. BPKP aimed to train farmers and expand natural farming practices but was limited in scope compared to NMNF.

3. How does the NMNF differ from BPKP?

• Scope: NMNF is a standalone scheme with a broader mandate, while BPKP was part of PKVY.

• Funding: NMNF allocates ₹2,481 crore, including both central and state contributions. BPKP had a lower budget and limited reach.

• Coverage: NMNF aims to involve 15,000 clusters and one crore farmers, whereas BPKP targeted smaller clusters.

• Focus: NMNF emphasizes large-scale training (18.75 lakh farmers) and awareness campaigns, whereas BPKP concentrated on localized adoption.

4. What are the objectives of the NMNF?
• Reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
• Rejuvenate soil health and fertility.
• Address climate risks like flooding, drought, and soil degradation.
• Lower input costs for farmers while enhancing sustainability.

5. How is the NMNF being implemented?

• Clusters: 15,000 clusters in Gram Panchayats are targeted over two years.

• Training: Farmers will be trained to prepare and use bio-inputs like Jeevamrit and Beejamrit.

• Awareness Campaigns: 30,000 Krishi Sakhis will drive awareness and mobilization.

• Demonstration Units: 2,000 model farms will showcase natural farming techniques.

6. What are the expected outcomes of the NMNF?
• Expansion of natural farming across 7.5 lakh hectares.
• Reduction in health risks due to pesticide exposure.
• Development of chemical-free produce markets.
• Improved soil fertility and reduced input costs.
