What is a Sunken Museum?

A sunken museum is an architectural design where the structure is built below ground level. This design helps integrate the museum seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, often creating a more immersive experience and providing natural insulation.

Location and Significance

The first sunken museum in India is located at the Humayun’s Tomb Complex in New Delhi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Inauguration Details

• Date: 30 July 2024
• Inaugurated By: Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Prince Rahim Aga Khan.

Architectural Inspiration

The museum’s design is inspired by the ancient ‘Baolis’ or step wells of Delhi, reflecting traditional architectural elements.

Key Features and Exhibits

• Collections: Over 500 artefacts from the National Museum, Archaeological Survey of India, and Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

• Exhibits Include: Miniatures, manuscripts, coins, contemporary art, astrolabes, celestial spheres, stone inscriptions, and architectural models.

Development Partners

The museum was developed in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust and the Archaeological Survey of India.

Purpose and Importance

According to Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the museum links historical and modern narratives, preserving the cultural heritage and stories of humanity.
